The reason Jesus was lifted up showed the darkest parts of human nature. As Moses lifted up the serpent for the people to confront their problems, so Jesus was lifted up so that we can metaphorically look at the cross, look at what human nature is capable of doing. Then ask God to remove those things from our character, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
